Voicing the ACC: Bringing Bobblehead Mascots to Life
As a voice actor, every project is a chance to stretch my vocal cords and breathe life into unique characters. My latest gig with the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) was a touchdown of creativity, and I’m thrilled to share that it’s been spotlighted in AdWeek for its innovative approach to college football marketing.
A Playful Quartet of Characters
In this exciting series of TV spots, I had the privilege of voicing four distinct bobblehead mascots, each representing the spirit of an ACC school. From the friendly laid back vibe of UC Berkeley's Cal Bear to the Effortlessly cool Pitt Panther, I got to flex my range, crafting voices that captured the heart and humor of these iconic figures. The campaign, part of the ACC’s “ACCOMPLISH GREATNESS” initiative, uses these wobbly resin stars to highlight the conference’s athletic and cultural legacy, and I’m proud to be part of it.
Behind the Mic: Crafting the Voices
The creative team at Wasserman, in collaboration with key staff from the ACC, leaned into the expressive nature of bobbleheads to tell a story of rivalry and unity. My job? To make each mascot pop with personality. For instance, one character needed a bold, commanding tone to rally the crowd, while another called for a cheeky, playful vibe that leaned into the fun of college game days. Switching between these voices was a blast, and it showcased the versatility I bring to every session. We captured everything in a 2 hour session bouncing between character voice ideas, and scripts. Then refined a couple of our choices in a quick pickup session.
I love to collaborate in real-time with the director and clients in directed sessions. All of these projects are a team effort, and while I'm of course happy to sit and play on the microphone by myself in the booth, that real-time back and forth usually leads to a better end result... plus it's a ton of fun!
Why This Campaign Stands Out
What makes this project special is its fresh take on college sports marketing. As AdWeek noted, the ACC tapped into the cultural cachet of their mascots to create ads that resonate beyond the field, airing across linear TV, digital platforms, and social media. Voicing characters in a campaign that’s both nostalgic and forward-thinking was a unique challenge, and I loved every second of it.
